The EVO Story The Omega EVO 500 has been used by Opel for the German Touring Car Championship Racing (Deutschen Tourenwagen Meisterschaft DTM) during 1991 – 1993. According to the regulations at the time Opel had to build at least 500 vehicles in a series, suitable for road registration regulations. This job has been taken over by the special vehicle company Irmscher. In fact, only about 320 vehicles have been build between 1991 – 1993, since Opel used the Calibra model from 1994 onwards for the German Touring Car Championship Racing. Overall has the EVO 500 for the registered traffic regulation the same outstanding good looks as the racing model beginning at the 18" alloy rims and 235 tire size, the flared mudguards, the same wide wheel base, the adjustable front spoiler and the automatically adjustable hydraulic rear spoiler depending on the speed of the vehicle, which is a trademark of the EVO. Furthermore EVO’s power plant is a 3 litre, 24 valve 6 cylinder inline engine with forged pistons and crankshaft which were designed for the racing version to withstand 10000 revolutions per minute. With the reliability of the road version and its huge reserve of power, the racing version has increased moderately to just above 400 hp. After all a satisfying 230 hp is available for the road version, which takes the vehicle to a nominal speed of 249 km/h. Based on the adapted characteristics of the racing version, the car has an extremely good aerodynamics and suspension and is therefore capable of a very high top speed. To achieve maximum top speed depends really on the driver and of course the traffic conditions on the Autobahn. An EVO driver can watch the speedometer in the range of 270 – 280 km/h without getting over excited and not even reaching the maximum revolutions of the engine. The smooth inline 6 cylinder has the same engineering developments common in the racing version. The engine reacts spontaneously when the throttle is pushed and it revs up instantly. The vehicle behaves fantastically on the road even at very high speed the car is glued to the road surface. One can drive it relatively relaxed and without getting sweaty at very high speed. The interior is of course much more comfortable than the Omega 3000 racing version. The comfortable Irmscher sport seats take it closer to a car made in a full production series. Although the car comes close to a racing machine, it is extremely reliable in every days use and not at all a racing machine, which tempts to race. The fuel consumption of the vehicle on the highway is about 9 liters per 100 km and the city cycle, 11 to 12 liters per 100 km can be expected. The sound of the engine is hardly noticeable up to 220 km/h as well as the sound of the air. The power of the brakes also exceeds by far what you can expect of a normal car, even of extravagant luxury sports cars. One can feel in many ways that the EVO is not a car of mass production. The original purchase price stands for that too. These vehicles have been available for about 100 000 DM depending on the outfit and the equipment. Today there are probably only 200 EVO’s left. In so far there are a nice and rare collectors items and in that sense every owner is keen to keep the originality of their vehicles as much as possible. The EVO 500 is one of the nicest and most exclusive car Opel has produced in the last centuries. In that sense, it is hoped that such vehicles will be seen for a long time to come.
The Lotus Story From 1991 onwards it was not anymore as it used to be in the upper automotive class. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported at that time about the course of creeps and the revenge of the disinherited. The Reason of this scenery was the introduction of the Lotus-Omega, the Omega 500 and the Irmscher Senator 4.0i. Drivers of exclusive sports cars found themselves all of a sudden in the slower end of the pack. The high volume production car manufacturer Opel has allowed itself to produce the strongest and fastest limousine in the world. It looked like a normal family car, but was as fast as a Ferrari. The world of the exclusive sports cars was out of order. In fact, even today the technical data of the Lotus Omega are still absolutely impressive. The GM-daughter company Lotus has fundamentally improved the base model of the Omega 3000 24V. The engine capacity has been increased to 3.6 litres and additionally two Garrett T25 turbocharger have been added to optimize the power characteristics. The result was an engine output of 377 hp to German Industrial Standard with a maximum torque of 557 Nm at 4200 Rpm. The Omega 3000 series gearbox has been replaced by 6 gear box made by ZF. The vehicles aerodynamics, the suspension and braking system has also been optimized. The suspension system has been described by various test drivers as just superb since it behaves very tight without loosing comfort. The ability to keep track is compared with an intercity high speed train. The braking system is also illustrious beyond all doubts and projects a feeling of throwing an anchor or driving into a soft rubber wall when used. The vehicles outfit is determined by various aerodynamic features including forged 17" alloy rims with 234/40 front tires and 265/40 back tires. The attractive interior is supported by exclusive Connolly leather seats. A purchase price of about 125000 DM for a car like this was excellent value. At the end of the day, the vehicles data and facts do count. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds is impressive, but even more the acceleration from 0 to 200 km/h in 18.3 seconds. These data challenge the law of gravity and surpass even the Porsche Turbo and the Ferrari Testarossa. The mighty power of more than 500 Nm gives a feeling of enormous power when accelerating. In fact the acceleration from 230 to 260 km/h equals that of a normal Omega 3000 at about 130 km/h. The vehicles top speed exceeding 280 km/h is beyond good and bad anyway. With our ‘black’ Lotus or EVO cars we are hardly ever afflicted by other drivers of fast cars on the Autobahn. The reason is that they have developed an imperative respect based on past experience facing a Lotus power machine or the Opel with the big rear spoiler or, they simply acknowledge what sort of car we drive. The photos shows one of our most beautiful Lotus Omega.
